(1)

A youthful yaksha, who diverged from his duties:
Those stood due every morning to his master
Kuber, the God of Wealth, and king of yakshas;
As his newly-wed wife retained him back,
Into her lovely youthful embrace, twined
In bed, long-after the day-break; got deprived
Of his superhuman power that he enjoyed
Being an yaksha, through which he could hide
His presence, at his sweet will: thus maintained,
His status, much-much higher than the humans;
Was further cursed by the master and exiled
From kingdom, to dwell far from his sweet-heart,
For a year-long period of painful separation;
Moved out to places, in search of an abode,
And settled among the hermitages of yore,
On mountain Ramgiri full of lovely shadows
Caused by large trees and thickets; and those ponds,
That stood turned sacred by Sita’s ablutions.

There, on that mountain, decoupled thus, he dwelled;
Deprived of sensual pleasures; an’ few months passed:
Lost lots of fat and flesh: got so slimmed-down,
That, his gold-bracelets slipped-out un-noticed,
Baring his wrists-forearms: he pined so much!
But when, on the day first of Ashhadha, he glanced
At its first cloud, that rested on the peak
Of yonder mountain - quite a feast for eyes -
Quite like an elephant butting in-sport with tusks,
At an elevated muddy bank of a river!

He stood somehow, being weak, in the front of the peak;
Suppressing, fast-condensing innermost vapours,
From becoming pouring tears - when he beheld
The cloud - the principal cause of intense longing;
He got concerned about the state of his wife
- His beautiful youthful wife, suffering separation;
That turns more intolerable midst rainy seasons -
As a result of his angered lord, a king:
He himself being a solely servile subject,
Had no other go, but to suffer as decreed!
In over-cast days: all the couples that are blessed
To enjoy sensualities at their sweet will,
Being united thus, at their homes in love,
Long for much more of it, so closeted firmly;
How great shall not be the longing, then, of lovers:
Who, being separated, long for deep embraces?
