A Single Tear


"Stay a while, pull up a chair,
take a seat," she said with a smile.
So I sat and I watched her
as she moved from place to place,
A little nervy, I could tell,
Just by the look on her face.
Sitting opposite, .... face in cupped hands,
She tried to hold my gaze.
Her hair in red/brown strands
flowed down across her cheek,
Likening to the dawn's sun rays,
warming all that she would seek.
I looked into her eyes,
those haunting dark brown eyes,
and marvelled at their depth,
where once deep pools of love
had glistened there,
they were now empty, and so clear.
Where had the love gone, I thought,
From one as loving as she,
Where had the love gone ?
That once she had for me ?
I placed a hand in front of her,
to see what she would do,
Slowly raising it to her lips,
She whispered, "I Love You".
But I remembered times gone by,
when these same words were said,
And vows of love, "'til eternity",
still echoed in my head.
I touched my fingertips to her cheek,
so soft to touch, unable to speak.
I caressed her face. Her mouth, her lips,
inviting, to be kissed once more.
I stood and took my hand,
And placed it upon her heart,
And said "If this not be mine",
"Then surely we must part".
And as I took my leave that day,
From one I'd loved so dear,
I caught a glimpse,
Of dark brown eyes
and red/brown hair,
And what was that ?
A single tear ?
