Mother sits there in the wicker chair
So oblivious, so free of all ties
As she turns and looks at me
No flicker of recognition, enters her eye

Mid-sentence, does she suddenly stop
Words forgotten, the mind in a maze
Dad and I exchange despairing looks
As, into the distance, she fixes her gaze

The change is such an insidious one
The forgetfulness, ever so gradual
May be it's just old age, we hope
As her face pales, her eyes grow dull

Is the the same old tartar of yore
Who rules us with an iron hand?
Her bewildered looks cut me quick
Her transformation, I fail to understand

As I struggle to know this stranger
Just a shadow of her former self
So unafraid, in her self-made cocoon
With great trepidation, we look for help

Tho' Doctor's verdict comes as a blow
Sadness, desolation we resolve to beat
Together we avow, to bring her back
Alas,.. Alzheimer's is a One-way street

Tears sting my eyes, as I hold her
Saying to myself, all will be fine
Though once long ago, I was her child
Today, now and forever - She Is Mine..
