It was really an untimely demise of Mr. Pramod Mahajan.

May Mr. Mahajan's soul rest in peace and I pray to GOD to give courage to his family members in this sad time.

Mumbai: BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, who was battling for life after being shot at by his younger brother Praveen on April 22, died at the Hinduja Hospital on Wednesday, doctors said.

He was 56.

"Mahajan succumbed to bullet injuries at 4.10 pm," CEO of Hinduja Hospital, Pramod Lele told reporters.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Dr Gustad Daver, who led the team of doctors for the last 12 days, said it was Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) that took the toll.

"We tried our level best to save him and our team of surgeons and intensivists as well as foreign doctors, OT and ICU staff worked round-the-clock to save him," Lele said, adding "but God willed otherwise".

Mahajan was shot thrice by Praveen at point-blank range on April 22 at his residence at Worli, allegedly over family problems.

The BJP leader, whose condition remained critical throughout the treatment at the hospital, worsened during the last 36 hours after he developed ARDS and suffered multiple-organ failure.

His wife Rekha, daughter Poonam, son Rahul and brother in-law and senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde were at the bedside when the end came.
