Counting By Day

The day dawns with a smile
And the heart awakens in hope
And begins to search a while
For the twilight afar in the deep.

As the music fades into oblivion
And the stillness deepens to disarray,
The weary hour lingers to lengthen
The stony moments of a stricken day.


Then the daily rhythm of a blazing sun
Beckons the pace of a limping week
And the mood betrays the mocking tone
In disdaining paradies of each passing dusk.

As the moody months seem to loom,
The winter lingers in the valleys
And blows over the daisies in bloom
And dashes off the fragrance of the lilies.

Then with a heavy sigh I look back
And gloat over the innocence lost
Of the bygone lot in the pace of a wink
With memories of an unfathomed past.
