“Gold and silver"...

In November 1896, Swami Vivekananda was lecturing in London. Mary Hale, one of his American disciples wrote a letter to him seeking his opinion on American politics. At that time President’s election was due. Campaigning for presidential elections had gathered tremendous tempo. The question of currency in gold and silver had become a great controversial issue between the two candidates, William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley. Ultimately, the issue became a clash between rich and poor, capitalists and labourers. Mary wanted to know Swami Vivekananda’s opinion about the relative merits of gold and silver. But Swamiji was always aloof from politics either in India or anywhere else.
So he replied:
“Gold and silver, my dear Mary, have I none, but what I have, I give to thee freely, and that is the knowledge of the goldness of gold, the silverness of silver, the manhood of man, the womanhood of woman, the reality of everything is the Lord, and this Lord we are trying to realize from time without beginning in the objective... ”
