3 men go into a motel. The desk clerk said the room
was $30, so each man  paid $10 and went to the room. A while later, the
desk clerk realized the  room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3
guys' room with $5. On  the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to
split $5 evenly between 3  men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2
for himself. This meant  that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a
total of $27. Add to  that the $2 the bellboy kept and the total is $29.

 Where is the other dollar?

Hey.. Pooja its only miscalculation...

Well $25(motel cashier) + $ 3 (divided equally among three men) + $2 (kept by bellboy) = $ 30 ..

So where from the other $ came ?

question is each person paid $10.00 get back $1.00 so they paid $9.00 each. So it means each person paid $9.00. (9*3=27) $2 the bellboy kept and the total is $27 + 2 =29.

so where is $1.00???

The room cost $25, so each man paid one-third of that cost ($8.33).
The bellboy kept a tip of $2,
so each man paid one-third of that cost ($0.67) as well.
Overall,
each man paid out $9 ($8.33 + $0.67) and
had a dollar left over: (3 x $9) + (3 x $1) = $27 + $3 = $30

This is an age-old puzzle that never fails to confuse some people. I think it's due to the wording and that people are just used to adding things up without thinking of what the answer means, and then 29 is so close to 30 you think you just made a small mistake somewhere. In fact, when adding the men's cost for the room and getting 27, you should subtract the bellboy's 2 to get 25 -- the price of the room. If you want to know where the $30 went, you add up $25 to the manager, $1 to each of the three roomers, and $2 to the bellboy

This problem in fact is an optical illusion. The problem only arises when we look at the matter the wrong way. Let us break down the 30$ amount:

1-   Kept by hotel      25$
2-   Kept by the bellboy   2$
3-   Returned      3$

Now because each customer has been returned 1$ each the net expense is 27$. Expense is 27$ because 2$ dollars were kept by the bellboy. To get to the total of 30 we do not have to consider those 2$ again. We get to 30 by adding 3$ that the customers have been returned and not 2$ that the bellboy kept.

Right Way to Look at the Problem
Net Expense      25+2=27
Returned      3
Total         27+3=30

Wrong Way to Look at the Problem
Net Expense      25+2=27
Returned      3
Total         27+2=29

See, we should not try and add 2 again and then go looking for the missing dollar, because 2 has already been added.
