difference between www and non-www sites

Hello,
i have heard some where that sites like http://abc.com and http://www.abc.com can be totally different sites.. but when i open the www.yoindia.com and only yoindia.com i comes to this site only ??

Are really www.sitename.com and sitename.com are different ??

Well...
Sometimes site name without www and with www can yield totally different results. So domain with www and without www can be totally different sites

What do mean.. can anyone register domain.com and www.sitename.com differently ? i don't think.. now a days.. when u register a domain it means with www or without www it is your domain ie. only one. :!!
